Prep School Guard Makes Decision

Varez Ward took an official visit this week and shortly after the visit he made a verbal commitment. Ward will play his college basketball in the Big East.

Mick Cronin and his staff built a strong relationship with Lenoir (N.C.) Patterson Prep standout Varez Ward, and on Thursday it paid off, as they picked up a verbal commitment from the 6-foot-3 guard.

"I've been talking to them for a very long time," Ward said. "They've been recruiting me real hard and the relationship I built with them was just unbelievable. I just felt really comfortable and I think I'll be able to play there."

Ward, a three-star prospect on, took an official visit to Cincinnati on Monday. While on campus, Ward felt at home and envisioned himself playing for the Bearcats.

"I just walked around the campus," Ward, who was originally a member of the 2007 class, said. "I got to see their arena and their facilities were real nice. I just really enjoyed myself up there."

Ward joins Yancy Gates, of Cincinnati (Ohio) Withrow, Cashmere Wright, of Savannah (Ga.) Urban Christian Academy, and Dion Dixon, of Chicago (Ill.) Crane, to make up Cincinnati's 2008 class.

This past season Ward averaged 16 points a game for Patterson.
