Waggener Not Ready Yet

Austin Waggener, a 6-8 power forward from Culver City (Calif.), is an intriguing prospect who hasn't yet received much exposure...

Austin Waggener, 6-8 SR PF Culver City (Calif.) High, told us last night that he will wait until spring to make a decision. Waggener showed considerable upside in the Rockfish Spring League, but he sprained an ankle prior to the summer and not many coaches had an opportunity to see him play in July.

We asked Waggener about the schools he's been hearing from. "Pepperdine, Boston University, Cornell, Colorado St., Cal Poly, UC Riverside, UC Irvine and Long Beach St.," Waggener replied.

Waggener told us that he wants to give schools an opportunity to see him play. "This was my first summer of AAU ball, and then I sprained my ankle and not many people saw me," said Waggener. "I haven't been out there long enough to learn what I could do. After this season, I could get a lot of hits."

We asked Waggener for his thoughts on staying close to home. "I don't really want to be in the cold, so I'll most likely be local," Waggener said. "But I didn't want to close the door on going away since there's a lot of fine schools in the east."

Waggener has taken unofficial visits to Long Beach St. and Cal Poly. "I had a good time on both visits," said Waggener. "I enjoyed myself. One thing I liked about Cal Poly is that I'd like to major in architectural design or engineering and they had a major for architectural engineering."

Waggener told us that he has a GPA of 3.4 and scored 1210 on the SAT.
