Thompson, Two Others Pick ASU

Appalachian State head coach Houston Fancher had a big week. The Mountaineers will sign at least three prospects at the start of the period next week.

Three To Ink With Fancher

The Appalachian State men's basketball team will send letters of intent to Demetrius Scott, David Hardy and Darryl Thompson when the signing period begins Nov. 13.

Hardy, a 6-8 power forward from Sheridan (WY) Junior College, is a North Carolina native who'll be making a return to his roots. He's 6-8.

Scott was a standout with the Central Florida Force at the 2002 AAU National Championship. This is where Appalachian State might have stolen one. Scott has range and athleticism and we thought he was a terrific mid-major player coming out of the summer. Credit assistant Matt McMahon for staying on top of this one.

The third commitment is a player quite familiar with the Appalachian State program. Darryl Thompson of Leesville Road in Raleigh is coach by Darryl Robinson, a former Appy State standout.

Thompson played on the 2001 state runner-up team as the point guard alongside Shawan Robinson (Clemson) and Anthony Richardson (Florida State).

"Darryl, in my eyes, has always been a coach's dream," Robinson said. "He plays so hard at both ends of the floor and he has waited patiently for this. I think once the confidence grew and he saw that he could play with and even outplay some people with the national reputations it was nice to see.

"ASU is a wonderful school and Coach Fancher worked really hard in getting Darryl."
