1,274 Wins Later, Wootten Retires

Morgan Wootten has called it quits. The veteran coach of 46 years retired on Wednesday with a career record of 1,274-192. In case you were wondering, that's the most wins of any high school coach in history.

Wootten, 71, Retires From Coaching

Morgan Wootten, the legendary head coach at DeMatha, retired on Wednesday. Saying that he had a gut feeling it was time, he stepped aside and assistant Mike Jones will take over on an interim basis this year.

Among the many highlights of Wootten's career was a win over Lew Alcindor and Power Memorial that snapped the school's 71-game winning streak. Wootten has coached 12 players who went on to play in the NBA, the most recent being Joe Forte.

The coach won at least 20 games in 44 straight seasons. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000 and survived a liver transplant in 1995. Wootten, 71, was born in Durham, N.C.
