Ayers Leads Young Playaz

The youngsters from the 16 and under Playaz Basketball Club opened their season with a strong win. Cameron Ayers led the youth movement at the Spring Fling.

During the Final Four, a number of high-powered AAU teams gathered in Jersey for the annual Spring Fling presented by Jimmy Salmon and the Playaz Basketball Club.

Something strange happened during the 17-and under portion of the event. When it came time to award the championship trophy, a 16-and-under club was center stage accepting the hardware.

The Playaz entered an older group and younger contingent in their own tournament and it was Cameron Ayers and the youth movement that won the event. Ayers' en route to winning MVP honors, helped his team slide past the D.C. Blue Devils, NY Panthers, Metro Hawks and D.C. Assault.

In the title game, according to Salmons, Ayers scored a 3-pointer, was fouled and made the extra toss en route to the 74-73 win. The son of the former 76ers coach is hearing from Notre Dame and Villanova already.

"He's a bit of an unknown commodity," Salmon said. "I would assume Notre Dame and Villanova are on him; I know Rutgers is on him hard now too." The event was held on the Scarlet Knights campus.

Sophomores Isaiah Epps, Jayon James and Trevor Clemmings each scored 22 or more points in games leading up to the final.
