Robert Smith Reaches Decision

Robert Smith, a talented junior point guard from Southern California, gave a verbal commitment yesterday to a WCC program...

Robert Smith, 5-11 JR PG Perris (Calif.) High, told me yesterday that he has committed to Santa Clara.

"They offered me a few months ago and I just committed today," said Smith. "They made me feel comfortable -- it was like a family."

This is a big get for the Broncos, as Smith is currently our top-rated 2009 point guard in California.

I asked Smith who the other finalists were in his recruitment.

"USC and Cal had offered," said Smith.

While it might seem surprising that Smith would choose a WCC program over a couple Pac-10 offers, this recruitment was a long time in the making. Bronco head coach Kerry Keating started recruiting Smith a couple years ago, back when Keating was an assistant at UCLA. That relationship ultimately paid dividends for the Broncos.

Smith's FBC Perris team had a solid showing in Denver at the Double Pump tournament, as Smith was helped by teammates Rodney Black, 6-5 JR SF/SG Perris (Calif.) High and Myron Samuel-Peyton, 6-2 JR SG Perris (Calif.) High.

Smith has yet to take a visit to Santa Clara, but says he'll see the campus soon.

"I'm going up there next month to visit," said Smith.
