Nix Takes Big Ten Offer

Derrick Nix, a Detroit native, committed to his dream school Monday afternoon. The Class of 2009 standout is headed to a Big Ten power.

The Michigan State Spartans have a move. Derrick Nix, a big center out of Detroit (Mich.) Pershing committed to the Michigan State Spartans Monday afternoon.

The 6-foot-8, 275 pounder picked the Spartans quickly. Central Michigan also offered but the big dogs were about to start barking his way.

"I wanted to go to Michigan State and they offered me," Nix said. "I went ahead and committed."

Nix plays on an AAU team – The Family – that has four potential high-major frontcourt players. His strong play at the Boo Williams followed up by viewings at an event last weekend must have given Tom Izzo's crew enough confidence to ask him to be a part of the team.

"They saw me Saturday and Sunday and after that, that's when they did it. I had been talking to them. I knew what was going on so it was good. I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. "

At Murray-Wright, Nix averaged 17 points and 16 rebounds. He's still crafting his body into shape and working on conditioning. Having said that, there's a real talent in his frame. Excellent feet and hands to match, once he sheds more pounds the Spartans will have a legit big man capable of banging and scoring in the Big Ten.
