Talented Point Guard Emerges

There's a new point guard in the 2009 mix and his name is Eric Bledsoe. The lead man out of Alabama had a big weekend at the Real Deal on the Hill with the Birmingham Ice.

It didn't long for Eric Bledsoe to make a name for himself on the circuit.

The 6-foot, 160-pound point guard out of Birmingham (Ala.) Carol W. Haynes runs with Birmingham Ice and this past weekend at the Real Deal on the Hill he put his full game on display in front of college coaches.

"He played real well this weekend," Ava Herndon, of Birmingham Ice said. "He stepped it up on the defensive end, which I was proud of. That's where his game is really evolving, on the defensive end."

Bledsoe said he played "good" this weekend, but was quick to point out that he needs to work on his jump shot. The class of 2009 lead man described his game as a true point guard and compared his game to one of the best in the NBA.

"I'm a Chris Paul type player," Bledsoe said. "I play like Chris Paul. I pass the ball. I really don't shoot that much. I just set up my teammates."

With a thin crop of point guards in the 2009 class, Bledsoe's recruitment will likely take off this spring and summer. After the first evaluation weekend Herndon spoke to a bunch of coaches inquiring about Bledsoe.

"Yesterday my phone blew up for him, but it's really been pretty much all mid-major offers," Herndon said. "He has offers from Ole Miss and UAB, but other than that mostly mid-majors. He's definitely a high major player."

To go with offers from the Rebels and Blazers, Bledsoe also has college interest from Iowa, VCU, Marquette, Alabama and Bradley. He's also taken unofficial visits to Alabama and Mississippi.

Bledsoe and his Birmingham Ice squad will be back in action this weekend at the Big Shots Mississippi tournament in Starkville (Miss.).
