Hoosiers Land First Recruit

The Indiana Hoosiers are on the board in the Class of 2003. On Saturday, they hosted a recruit and the Iowa native wasted little time in picking the Hoosiers.

Gray Picks IU

Indiana Hoosiers fans were wondering when their first commitment of the year would come. On Saturday, they got their answer.

Jessan Gray, a power forward from Davenport (IA) Central High, committed to Mike Davis. Gray averaged 7 points and 4. 5 rebounds a contest as a junior.

We caught him in action at the May Speice Run ‘n Slam event with the Martin Brothers Select. At that point, we thought he was a nice looking athlete with a good medium-range touch. A redshirt year would probably be best for his development.

His AAU coach Hank Huddleson wasn't surprised by IU's offer, just by its timing. "I was [surprised] from the fact they came this year," he said. "He's the type of kid that will end up either going overseas or getting drafted out of college and everyone will wind up asking themselves ‘how did that happen?'"

Like a lot of 6-8, 205 pound kids, Indiana is probably thinking long-term instead of immediate dividends. "If they're looking for him to come in and be an impact player, that'll be hard for him," Huddleson said. "If they want a redshirt, someone they can take under his wing, then they can help him."
