Painter Makes The Call

Deshawn Painter found his dream school. During an unofficial weekend visit, the 2009 standout made his college commitment.

The Florida Gators recruited Deshawn Painter for a long time. The Chatham (Va.) Hargrave product made an unofficial visit to Gainesville over the weekend and locked him down.

"Florida knows where I'm at as a person and a player," Painter said. The 6-foot-9 power forward looked strongly at Louisville and Virginia. He'll be amongst Scout.com's Top 60 prospects when the rankings update gets rolled out this week.

Painter had a strong desire to leave his home area. His friend Vernon Macklin will be a Gator and Painter is excited to join him.

Painter Picks Gators

"It went down good," Painter said. "I liked the campus and the players. Most of all, I had a great relationship with the coaches. In my heart, that was the school I wanted to go to. It was everything I thought it would be and it was a done deal."

The Gators front line is looking strong. Painter joins Southborough (Mass.) St. Mark's standout Erik Murphy to make up Florida's future frontcourt.

The unofficial visit and Florida's commitment to Painter put them over the top. "It was just a matter of me going to see them. It's one school that it doesn't matter if I'm ranked 80 or 1,000 they want me. It's my style, they let the bigs shoot. I wanted to go with Florida and that's the way it was.

"It's a dream for me. That's where I'm going to college."
