Ward Headed To Big 12 Land

Rick Barnes needed a wing and Varez Ward filled the bill. On Sunday night, the native of Alabama found a new home on Texas turf.

The Texas Longhorns were in search of backcourt assistance and on Sunday, Rick Barnes' program found their man. Varez Ward, a 6-foot-3 wing out Patterson (N.C.) Patterson School.

The versatile Ward picked up the phone and pledged allegiance to the Longhorns.

"I think they're going to use him in a lit of different ways," Chris Chaney, Ward's Patterson coach told Scout.com. "He's a wing kid and a Texas, hard-nosed type of kid. He's about team first; those are things that I think Texas will develop."

For one of the top prep school team in the nation, Ward averaged 15.5 points and 5 assists. He ran with Southeast Elite on the traveling team circuit.

Ward was ranked as the No. 19 post-graduate prospect in the nation two weeks ago by Scout.com.
