Dawkins Makes His Pick; Headed To The ACC

Andre Dawkins wasn't planning on making his college decision soon, but things changed after a recent visit. Dawkins is headed to the ACC.

After taking a visit to Duke earlier in the week, Andre Dawkins, of Virginia Beach (Va.) Atlantic Shores Christian, returned home ready to make his college decision. Dawkins called the Duke coaches Thursday night and gave them the word.

"I've always liked Duke," Dawkins said. "That was a goal of mine back when I was in eighth grade. My parents asked me and I said I want to go to Duke and I've just been working. It's a dream come to true to see all the hard work pay off."

Dawkins, who averaged just over 24 points a game last season, had scholarship offers from a host of programs, but ultimately picked Duke over Maryland and Georgetown.

"I just felt comfortable there," the 6-foot-4, 192-pound SG said. "That was just the right fit for me."

Dawkins had always planned on waiting out the process, but when he received an offer from Duke and took a trip to their campus, things changed.

"I think it was the visit," Dawkins said. "Going down there I wasn't really planning on [committing]. They blew me away."

The 2010 standout is ranked as a four-star prospect on Scout.com. He is the first member of the 2010 class to commit to the Blue Devils.
