Gators, O'Donnell Amicably Part Ways
Shortly after the summer period concluded, point guard Mike O'Donnell committed to Florida. O'Donnell and the Gators planned for him to spend a year at prep school and then red shirt his first season at Florida. But, the full qualifier had second thoughts and retracted his commitment.
"I think I made too quick of a decision," O'Donnell said. "I'm not totally sure that after talking with my parents that I want to go to prep school and wait the extra year after prep school and maybe a red shirt year too."
O'Donnell has informed the Florida staff. "Coach Donovan was extremely respectful to me." He intends to open up his recruitment. That recruitment will likely begin at the mid-major level.
The point guard said style of play will help him make a decision in the future and he'll be looking to major in business or sports medicine.
And what would O'Donnell's advice be to those thinking of committing early? "I think you should definitely explore every option. My situation was somewhat unique with the prep school and possible red shirt. That was a little different. I would definitely take all five visits."
Ironically, in the coming months, O'Donnell will get a second chance to do just that.
