Junior Profile: Joe Gates
Joe Gates, 6-9 JR PF Arcata (Calif.) High, moves well for a big guy and showed decent shot-blocking skills this past summer. He can shoot out to about fifteen feet, with developing low-post skills. He'll need to add weight and strength, but he has the potential to turn into a solid post player at the mid major level and potentially higher. We spoke with Gates recently and he told us that his current list consists of Santa Clara, San Jose St., Fresno St., Colorado St., Portland, Loyola Marymount and Pacific. He's taken unofficial visits to Santa Clara and San Jose St. Gates told us that he's willing to go anywhere but, everything else being equal, he'd like to stay in California. We asked about the factors that would influence his decision and Gates said, "how I like the campus, the tradition and history -- how they've been in the past -- and the coaching." Gates said that early playing time isn't a major consideration. "I don't want to go someplace where I'll sit for 2-3 years, but I don't mind if I can't play right away," said Gates. "I do want to go someplace that will need me though." Gates plans on taking his time with the decision. "If I find a place that I really like, I guess I could commit early, but I want to look at every option," said Gates. He plans on taking the SAT in January and told us that he has a 2.6 GPA.
