Status of Big-Time Athlete

The big-time talent, Dorell Wright, has always been a freakish athlete, but his basketball skills have continued to improve. Talent-wise, he could one of the best in the west in his class. But his recruiting is snagged...

Dorell Wright, 6-6 SR SF, Lawndale (Calif.) Leuzinger, could be one of the most purely talented players on the west coast. He's a freakish athlete, while his basketball skills are continuing to improve to the point that he, just on talent, could be one of the top ten players in his class in the west. On Wednesday, Wright, playing with Leuzinger, was the class of the Annual Pacific Shores Tournament in Redondo Beach, scoring 32 points with 16 rebounds.

The snag with Wright is academics. While many Pac-10 schools have recognized that he can play at the Pac-10 level, they've backed off since it appears he won't qualify. He said Wednesday that he's still hearing from Long Beach State, Iowa and Fresno State. He took an official visit to Long Beach State in October, and the 49ers might have the inside track and choose to bring him in as a prop 48. He'll more than likely go the prop, prep or JUCO route.
