"It just felt like the right place for me," Barnes said. "I like the guys, the school and the teammates."
Barnes, who is rated as a three-star prospect on Scout.com, cited a relationship with Tennessee Tech assistant coach Russ Willemsen as one of the reasons he went with Tech.
"When I first met him we were in the state playoffs a year ago, he just felt like a coach that I saw myself playing for. We just hit it off from there."
Barnes is the second pledge in Tennessee Tech's 2009 recruiting class. Barnes joins Chase Dunn, of Livingston Academy.
He averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds a game as a junior.
