Whiteside Has Options

College coaches are always looking for big men this time of year and Hassan Whiteside has been the target of many calls.

Hassan Whiteside has some decisions to make. The 6-foot-9, 195-pound big man, who emerged this past July, is taking a strong look at a few schools, but could opt to wait until the spring to make his college decision.

According to Lenoir (N.C.) Patterson Prep head coach Chris Chaney, Whiteside has a variety of college interest.

"A lot of people are calling about him," Chaney said. "He's really high on Marshall and Charlotte. He's getting calls from a lot of big schools like NC State, Kentucky and Connecticut. I think he wants to do something early, but you never know."

This weekend Whiteside is headed to Marshall for an official visit and a trip to Charlotte in the near future is likely.

"I think if he doesn't go to one of those places that he'll probably sign late," Chaney said.

On the court, Whiteside has made a lot of believers out of his game. Throughout July he showed an ability to get up and down the floor and block shots. His high school coach said his whole game is starting to come around.

"He's playing much better," Chaney said. "Everybody uses the word potential and upside with him, but he doesn't have a lot of experience playing. I don't think he's ever had the everyday competition and everyday coaching like he has now."

"He's responded well and is learning how to play and how to play hard all the time," he continued. "He's taking it step by step, but the good thing about him is he loves to play the game."

Whiteside is rated as a four-star prospect in the 2009 class, and checks in at No. 19 at the center position.
