Whiteside Ends Deal During Visit

Hassan Whiteside has been close to making a decision for a while and this weekend he opted to end his recruitment during an official visit.

For the second year in a row Donnie Jones mined the state of North Carolina for a highly regarded prospect. Last year it was Damier Pitts, this year the Thundering Herd scored Hassan Whiteside.

Whiteside, a 6-foot-9, 195-pound big man, committed to Marshall on Saturday while in Huntington (W.V.) for an official visit.

"When I was sitting down and watching footage of their games I liked their style and felt that I fit in," Whiteside said.

Since the summer, Whiteside began gaining interest from a variety of schools because of his size, length and potential.

"I need to get a better understanding of the game," he said. "I can do that if I listen to my coaches"

The Lenoir (N.C.) Patterson Prep product strongly considered Charlotte, and also picked up interest from North Carolina State, Kentucky and Connecticut.

Whiteside, a four-star prospect, is Marshall's first verbal commitment in the 2009 class.
