City of Palms: Day One

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Just three games were on the slate for the City of Palms Invitational on Wednesday. So far, we liked what we saw out of DJ Strawberry and Johnny Hodge who led their teams to opening round wins.

Wednesday Scoreboard

Ouachita Parrish 75, Miami Northwestern 50
John Bertram 61, Fort Myers 49
Mater Dei 87, Corbin 62

2003 Checklist

DJ Strawberry, SG, Mater Dei: Corbin didn't stand a chance against Mater Dei's athletes and Strawberry led the charge with 19 points. Probably at least 10 points came in transition and that had something to do with the 6 steals Strawberry recorded. He finished an efficient 9-for-13 from the field.

Johnny Hodge, SF, Ouachita Parrish: Really was the driving force as Parrish extended its lead. Had himself a complete game and a great stat line: 17 points, 6 rebounds, assists and 6 steals. He only missed three shots and went 9-for-11 from the line.

Jay Jackson, SG, Ouachita Parrish: He was a second half guy today scoring 14 points after the break. Most of his buckets came in transition and a few were courtesy some sweet dishes by Hodge. He finished with 22.

2004 Checklist

Robinson Louisme, C, Fort Myers: Never heard of him? Join the club. After a fine showing against Bertram, we're thinking he's a potential high-major candidate. He's 6-8 and 250. When Fort Myers tossed him the ball consistently, they closed the gap to a pair. When they didn't get him the basketball, they dug a hole they couldn't get out of.

Chris Henry, C, Mater Dei: He took 5 shots and hit 4 of them. It's a simple plan: get Henry the ball at close range and count it. He does a nice job of scoring in the paint and finishing plays. He's got a big body and guys bounce off of him.

Off The Dribble

Cedric McGowan had 19 and 8 in a loss to Ouachita Parrish. … Northwestern's Greg Killings is a sturdy 6-9, 220. He showed flashes of offense but isn't an aggressor. Certainly worthy of a second look as he appears to have a high-major body but his game isn't at that level. … Northwestern's Devon Pearson, an SMU signee, battled foul trouble the entire game and wasn't a factor. …

Bertram got out of the gate quickly as junior Bryant Leach tossed in 20 first half points. … Mater Dei's Wesley Washington threw down a pair of vicious dunks on Wednesday. Just plain nasty. … Mater Dei took Corbin out of the game early with their pressure. Corbin couldn't compete in the same athletic arena and basically just took the ball from Corbin at will. The official stats credited Corbin with just 8 team turnovers. That number is way off. … Corbin's Isaiah Mills, a Tennessee Tech signee, scored just 6 points and had 4 rebounds against Mater Dei. … Princeton signee Harrison Schaen had 12 points and 13 rebounds in Mater Dei's win.

Word is Ouachita's Johnny Hodge could need a two-year junior college. … Jay Jackson is keeping his options open. He's still hearing from Louisiana Tech, Georgia Tech, UL-Lafayette, UL-Monroe and Liberty. The Flames were in the building tonight. … The Fort Myers-Bartram game packed the stands and created a sweet high school basketball environment. …
