This spring, Darrin Horn's team will do just that. On Friday, Pennsauken (N.J.) Apex Academy wing guard Steve Spinella committed to play for the SEC program.
"I loved the facilities, it was incredible," the 6-foot-5 Spinella told Scout.com. "On top of that Coach Horn is an awesome person. What sold me on him was that he cared more about my well being and the type of person that I could be in four years before he cared about me and basketball and I liked that about him."
Seton Hall, UNC-Greensboro, Penn State and a number of programs from high and mid-major levels had been keeping tabs on his progress. Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech and Tennessee indicated to Spinella they were coming to see him. The Gamecocks moved on Spinella in December and recently had him on campus.
Spinella visited Columbia for the dramatic buzzer-beating win over Florida last Wednesday. Shortly thereafter, he pledged allegiance to the program.
"It was unbelievable, it blew my mind," Spinella said.
A big time student, Spinella brings a shooter's touch with size and sneak-up-on-you athleticism. From the summer until now, indications are that his game has advanced.
"I'm shooting a lot deeper and a lot more off the dribble and creating my own shot. I think I'm more explosive when I get to the basket. My game elevated to a whole new level. From the summer to now I'm a different player. I had 51 in a game this year."
