Rice Wins City of Palms

The Rice Raiders enjoyed quite a pre-Christmas run at the City of Palms Classic. On Monday night in front of a packed house, they defeated a second Top10 team in as many days.

Robinson Named MVP

Rice High School captured the 2002 City of Palms title by virtue of a 64-51 win over Kevin Boyle's St. Patrick's squad.

The Raiders were led by junior Arturo Dubois who scored a game-high 19 points against St. Patrick. Teammate Russell Robinson, also a junior, scored 18 points and was named the MVP of the tournament. Robinson gunned down Mater Dei with 42 points in Saturday's semifinals.

"We never had any flow," St. Patrick coach Kevin Boyle told the www.news-press.com. "I think part of it was the intimidation factor with Shagari in the middle, and we weren't shooting the ball well." Alleyne finished Alleyne had 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Mater Dei rebounded from Saturday's loss by topping St. Raymond's 97-76. The Monarchs were paced by Trevante Nelson and DJ Strawberry who scored 16 points each. Wesley Washington and Marcel Jones scored 15 each.

St. Raymond's starter Daon Merritt and Tariq Atkins missed curfew and were suspended for the game.
