Providence Scores Juco Big

The Providence Friars headed to the southwest and found themselves a big man. Russell Permenter visited and committed last weekend.

I bet the Providence staff enjoyed this recruitment. This year's cold temperatures up north were plenty enough reason for the Friars staff to scoot off the Temple Junior College in a Texas to watch a player.

On Monday, Russell Permenter, a 6-foot-9 insider pledged his allegiance to the program after considering South Alabama, Pepperdine and Penn State.

"They had him up for a visit and he really liked it and committed this weekend," Temple coach Kirby Johnson told Scout.com. Johnson accounts for 19 points, nine rebounds and 3.1 blocks a game. He's also on the President's Dean's list.

Permenter began his career at UTSA but broke his hand and opted to go the juco route following the injury.

"He's a big kid that can run and jump and has grades. There's not a lot of those guys out there. He can score from multiple spots. For us, he's more of a back to the basket guy with jump hooks. But, Providence is really interested because he can face up and shoot the 15-18 foot shot."
