Painter, Gators Won't Happen

Deshawn Painter is no longer part of the Gators recruiting class. The Hargrave Military Academy standout sought his release and is intent on playing the field.

The Florida Gators have a strong rotation of post players in the stable. Deshawn Painter, a senior at Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military Academy, will not be one of them next year.

The 6-foot-9 Tidewater area native is in the process of obtaining his release from the Gators and intends to look elsewhere.

"The reason why he's not going there is because he chose Florida based more on relationships and didn't take into consideration the opportunity to play right away," Hargrave coach Kevin Keatts said.

Painter, an exceptional athlete, was slated to come in with power forward Erik Murphy and join one-time AAU teammate Vernon Macklin in Gainesville. However, he's going to sit back and survey the scene.

"At this time he's going to weigh all his options, see what interest he gets and decide what he's going to do. He's going to look at his college options and toss around the possibility of doing a post grad year."
