Cobbins Sees Interest Expand

Palo Duro's Michael Cobbins, a member of the Class of 2010, has three offers and loads of interest from programs on both coasts.

Michael Cobbins is one of those big that would have benefited from extra sets of eyeballs this spring. However, without college coaches in gyms this April, those who know about him are ahead of the curve, those who don't will have to hope that they can get involved later in the summer.

Cobbins, a 6-foot-8 power forward, averaged 17.5 points and 10.3 boards for Amarillo (Tex.) Palo Duro this past season. He runs with the New Mexico Force on the traveling team circuit.

"He's a long 6-8, very slender build but has amazing length with very long arms and he's a left-handed kid," Palo Duro coach Jeff Evans said. "He shoots the ball well. He's not a great shooter yet but he's working his way towards that. He's real versatile; he can score inside and at the rim and he can step out and hit a shot."

Southern Cal, New Mexico and Virginia have offered. UTEP, Stanford, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Marquette, Georgia Tech, Indiana and Texas Tech have shown interested.

Cobbins has a wide range of programs on his list, including some like New Mexico (2 hours) that are reasonably close to home. Can he leave the region?

"I've talked to Mike quite a bit about this. I know when a kid's getting recruited a lot of places sound good but they're afraid to get away. Mike seems pretty open about leaving the region. I think he truly wants to go to the best place and not let the location determine the pick."
