"I needed something that said Western Kentucky," Gordon said. "I forgot my shirt so I put it on the wristbands."
On Friday, while attending Western's elite camp, Gordon made his decision. It comes as no surprise to those who know Gordon. For the past few months he's been using the moniker "Mr. Hilltopper" as his signature in text messages.
"Actually, I wanted to do it as soon as they offered me. I waited it out and the day came and I'm happy I did it. I just love this program so much.
"It feels great. I've been wanting to do it. Everything is nice down here. I love it a lot and I can see myself playing here."
Ken McDonald's program mired a relationship to nab the St. Patrick wing. Assistant coach Lawrence Brennerman recruited Gordon's brother a few years ago.
"Last summer, their assistant coach (Brennerman) started recruiting me. He recruited my brother when he coached at Binghamton. Coach Mac then came to see me in Florida and they offered me after a tournament in January. I have a great connection with the coaches. More than any other schools I talked to, I had that connection."
Now it's official, Derrick Gordon is "Mr. Hilltopper."
