2010 Introduction: Yannick Atanga

Yannick Atanga, a 6-6 senior power forward from Ojai (Calif.) Besant Hill, has started to garner attention from a wide variety of schools...

Yannick Atanga, 6-6 SR PF Ojai (Calif.) Besant Hill, is a bit undersized but his length, explosiveness and great motor will likely allow him to play at a high level in college.

Originally from Cameroon, Atanga is similar to former UCLA Bruins Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and Alfred Aboya in terms of his approach to the game. He plays with great energy and intensity at both ends of the court. His length and quickness allow him to defend multiple positions. His offensive skills are still a bit raw at this time, but he's shown considerable improvement in the last year.

I spoke with Atanga recently and he gave me a list of schools that have been in contact with him.

"California, Washington State, UC Santa Barbara, Gonzaga, UCLA, UNLV, Portland, San Francisco, UC Riverside, Texas and West Virginia," said Atanga.

I asked him if any school stands out at this time.

"No, I'm still wide open," said Atanga. "I want to get to know them and take my time."

Atanga talked a little about the issues that will factor into his choice.

"I'm looking for a school with a good education first, where I can really learn," said Atanga. "I want to play for a coach where the best guy plays. I like the West Coast, but I'm open to going anywhere."

Atanga has been on an unofficial visit to UCSB, as well as camps at UCLA, Cal and Santa Clara.

I asked him if he has a time frame for picking a school.

"I'd like to have a top five after July and then decide in the fall," said Atanga.

Atanga said he currently has a 3.0 GPA.
