Harris Packs For Eastward Trip

Joe Harris, a big time student and shooter, committed to play his college basketball in the ACC on Monday.

Virginia's Tony Bennett's affection for Chelan (Wash.) High shooting guard Joe Harris never ceased. Not even distance could get in the way of Bennett's desire to make him part of his program.

Harris, a 6-foot-5 marksman who shot 40 plus percent behind the arc last year, had offers from Washington State, BYU, Washington, SMU, San Diego and Portland. Bennett's approach and in the end, approachability, got it done for the Cavaliers. They trailed him hard in Vegas last month.

"It was Coach Bennett and the whole staff," Harris said. "He recruited me from Day One when he was at Washington State. I felt comfortable with them. They'll be my family away from my family.

"Coach's Bennett style (fits me). I have a good feel for what he's trying to do. I fit in pretty well with what he's trying to accomplish."

Bennett was omnipresent at Harris' games in Vegas when he played with the Friends of Hoop squad. In June, Harris attended Virginia's elite camp.
