SEC School Snags Hankerson

Charles Hankerson didn't want to waste any other coaches time, so he pulled the trigger for a SEC school.

College coaches were lining up in Orlando at AAU Nationals to check out Charles Hankerson. It turns out, most of the schools had a lot of ground to make up.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound wing made his college choice late Sunday night, as he gave a verbal commitment to Anthony Grant and the University of Alabama.

"They've been recruiting me the longest," Hankerson told Scout.com. "They were recruiting me when they were at VCU and the connection I have with coach [Anthony] Grant was big. He's like an older brother to me. That connection was definitely huge in my decision."

Auburn, Rice, Tulane, Virginia and Florida all showed varying types of interest in the recruiting process, but Hankerson, a standout at Miami (Fla.) Coral Reef, feel for everything the Crimson Tide had to offer.

"Just the fact that my parents loved them and everybody loved them and I thought it was the best choice for me was great," he said. "I didn't want to waste any other coaches time. So i wanted to pull the trigger."

Hankerson, who visited Alabama during their Elite Camp in June, also appreciated the fact that coach Grant targeted him enough to be the lead guy on his recruitment.

"He was the one that recruited me, and that was huge," he said. "He recruited me and it wasn't an assistant he recruited me himself."

Hankerson is Alabama's first 2010 verbal commitment.
