Mathis Drops 80 On Crossnore
Laurinburg Charter's varsity team is 20-4 after a 136-33 win over Crossnore; also a charter school. In the game, junior guard Troy Mathis destroyed his own career-high point total.
Kenneth Gordon, Charter's coach, called to report that his junior guard scored 80 points against Crossnore. The effort included a 7-for-10 performance from behind the arc and Mathis went 35-46 overall from the field.
At the half he had 45 points. "I never told him how much he had and when it was over, he thought he had 40 points," Gordon said.
Mathis also dropped 9 assists and 11 steals in the game. "There's a lot of people who still don't know him," Gordon said. "He played in the shadows of Anthony Richardson and Regis Koundjia on the AAU team." Raleigh's Finest is the AAU program Mathis runs with.
"I don't care who you're playing against," Gordon said. "It's hard to score 80 points." He came into the game averaging 23 points a game. His previous high going into the season was 28 against Broughton.
Laurinburg's prep team coached by Chris Chaney is currently ranked in some polls as the top prep school team in the nation. Rolando DeLaBerrera coaches Laurinburg's Institute team, a squad comprised mainly of Brazilian players.
