No Bull: Austin To the Big East

Stan Heath's South Florida program has a reputation for attracting big men. On Sunday, 6-10 Waverly Austin cast his lot with the Bulls.

Waverly Austin, a 6-foot-10 center out of Collinsville (Va.) Heat Academy, committed to South Florida this weekend. Austin's travel team coach, Duane Coverdale of the Delaware Sharpshooters, told Austin also looked at Cincinnati.

Originally from Fredericksburg, Va., Austin played at the Reebok All-America Camp last summer. South Florida was looking at another one of Coverdale's players when the Bulls saw what they liked out of Austin.

"They saw him when the were looking at Tayshawn Bell," Coverdale said. "They were intrigued by him and Waverly's mother lives in Jacksonville. They followed him on the circuit and he did an unofficial visit there."

Austin took his official visit to Tampa this weekend and ended the process. USF has fared well with bigs in recent years and it sees Austin as a guy who can play two positions.

"His skill level is better than people think and they think they can get it a little better. He can probably go in and backup the power forward and Gus Gilchrist next year and possibly start as a sophomore."
