Sleeper Garners Major Interest

Maarty Leunen, a sleeper small forward in the class of 2004, might be the best kept secret in the west. But four programs in the west have already spent considerable time and energy recruiting him...

Maarty Leunen, 6-8 JR SF Redmond (Ore.) High, hasn't had a lot of exposure, but that hasn't stopped several high major programs from recruiting him. We haven't seen Leunen play yet, but he's starting to generate a buzz among West Coast coaches and scouts.

We spoke with Leunen last night and he told us that Cal, Oregon and Oregon St. are his top three schools, with Gonzaga also in the mix. He told us he wasn't sure about Gonzaga's level of interest.

Leunen has already taken unofficial trips to Gonzaga and Cal. He's also been to an Oregon game and plans on attending the Oregon St. game Sunday when the Beavers host Stanford.

Leunen said he enjoyed his trip to Cal very much. "I liked it a lot. They have a lot to offer -- San Francisco is right there and the campus is great. The players and coaches were really cool."

In addition to academics, Leunen said he'll be looking for a program on the upswing, with a chance to win in the future. He also said he'll be taking a look at the facilities at each school. He doesn't see early playing time as a significant factor in his decision.

When questioned about the timing of his decision, Leunen said, "I thought I'd wait, but now as I find out more about the schools, I'm more anxious to make a decision."

Leunen told us he has a 3.3 GPA and scored 960 on the SAT. He said he plans on taking the test again.
