"He's got such a tremendous upside,:" St. Peter's coach Mike Kelly said. "The kid has played 24 varsity basketball games in his life. He loves the game and he works really hard at it. He loves the game."
Roberts ran with the Playaz Basketball Club in July and held offers from St. Joseph's, Temple, LaSalle and George Mason. Numerous bigger schools were interested in seeing what transpired with him during the season. However, St. John's moved on him.
"It came down to feeling comfortable with his teammates and he wants to play in the Big East," Kelly said.
Roberts is a relative newcomer to competitive basketball. Kelly feels like he's improved and will play his best ball in college.
"He transferred to us last year out of his hometown of Bayonne. He was moving to Jersey City and when we got him in the beginning of his junior year he had never played varsity basketball. We knew he had athletic ability, it was just a matter of him playing hard, understanding the game.
"Everybody who came to our gym and watched us workout fell in love with him. For the last three months we've worked on his perimeter game and he's starting to put the ball on the floor a little better. He's doing all the things that he needs to do."
