GSK: Day One Rundown

RALEIGH, N.C. – The best part of opening day at the GSK was the crowd. It was near capacity at Broughton's gym and those the games weren't particularly inspiring, the locals showed up to support their event.

C.J. Leslie, PF/SF, Word of God: There are not five more athletically gifted players in senior class. That's not opinion, it's a fact. The crowd at the GSK saw that minutes into WOG's win over Southern Wayne. Leslie's above the rim, monster tip dunk was one of the best plays I've ever seen him make. Leslie had 11 and 10. Word of God showed what five athletes can do against an overmatched opponent.

Brian Richardson, SG, Greenfield: There was a point in the third quarter when Richardson looked like he was on the cusp of catching fire but never throttled it into gear and struggled with his shot. Next season in Columbia it'll be about the weight room.

Weston Murphy, PF, Apex: The big upset belong to the Mountaineers and Murphy fueled the win with 29 points. Murphy has D-III offers and the hope is that this event pushes some of the Ivy's back into the mix. He's offer to a good start, making both of his 3s. His best games last year where in this building so you never know.

Dezmine Wells, SF, WOG: He's stepping into some big shoes. Wells, one of the top attacking small forwards in the junior class, slid over to play point guard. Wells gives the team a different look than it had with a guy named John Wall. He did a nice job as the conductor.

Drake-bound wing Jeremy Jeffers led Greenfield with 18 points. Brian Richardson (South Carolina) had 14. Combined they shot 7-for-20 as Greenfield never hit its stride. … Bishop Daniels had 13 points and Wells 12. … Word of God has a junior 6-foot-6 power forward named Stacy Caroway who is going to draw Division I interest. … Enloe survived and advanced. If it's going to use this event as a launching pad to a potential state title, it will need more out of its horse, Melvin Tabb. The Wake Forest-bound senior went 3-for-12 from the field for 8 points and 6 rebounds. He's capable of much more and the Eagles will need it. …

Dartmouth visited Weston Murphy but so far no Division I offers though he's got plenty of D3 ammo. …

N.C. State great Chris Corchiani was courtside with his son. "My family doesn't take a Christmas vacation because of this tournament. I love it, I'll be at every game."
