Junior SG Dawin Whiten

Dawin Whiten, a muscular 6-1 junior shooting guard from North Hills, CA, has three schools in mind at the moment...

Dawin Whiten, 6-1 JR SG Sepulveda (Calif.) Monroe, looks like he could step in at middle linebacker for a college team right now. He is very well put together for a high school junior. He didn't play football this past year, but said he may play his senior year in high school. He told us that he would play wide receiver or quarterback.

Whiten moves fairly well for a guy his size -- not super quick, but ok -- and he has a surprisingly nice touch with good range. His release is a bit low, but he makes a good percentage of his shots beyond the three-point line. His body type doesn't make you think of a classic two guard, but he does have some ability and it will be interesting to see how he progresses in the next year or so.

We spoke with Whiten recently and he told us that his three favorite schools at the moment are Stanford, UC Santa Barbara and Utah.

When we asked if he had any geographical preference, Whiten said, "I like the sun -- I'd prefer to stay in the west."

Whiten said coaching will be a big issue when he makes his choice. "I want to see which coach can make me better," said Whiten. "How much can I learn and how much better will I get?"

Whiten doesn't plan on making an early decision. "I want to wait and take some trips," said Whiten.

A good student, Whiten told us that he has a 3.7 GPA and he's waiting on his SAT results.
