Big East Calls Tharpe

Naadir Tharpe is staying close to home for college. The Brewster Academy floor general will play in the Big East for the Friars.

Keno Davis was out scouting senior point guards last week. A few days later, the Providence Friars accepted a verbal commitment from junior Naadir Tharpe out of Brewster Academy.

"I would have been shocked if he went someplace other than Boston College or Providence," Brewster coach Jason Smith said. "I didn't think he was leaving New England. Providence is in the Big East and it's under an hour from his house in Worcester."

The 5-foot-11 Tharpe was the point guard for the prep school national champions and was the MVP of the New Hampton Tournament.

"I think he's a true point guard," Smith said. "A lot of high school points are high volume shooters. This guy has a basketball IQ and makes guys better. He was great down the stretch for us this year."

Tharpe was ranked No. 62 in the Scout.com Top 100 junior list.
