Gilchrist Helps UK Pull Off Daily Double

Michael Gilchrist ends the suspense.'s top 2011 prospect is headed to the SEC.

John Calipari and Kentucky pulled off the daily double on Wednesday.

First the ‘Cats scored's No. 2 prospect in the 2010 class – Brandon Knight. Just an hour and a half later they scored a verbal commitment from Michael Gilchrist,'s No. 1 recruit in the 2011 class.

"I'll be going to the University of Kentucky," Gilchrist said during his announcement on ESPNU. "I like coach Cal a lot and his staff. I like the fans there a lot and it's a blessing. That's the main reason."

Gilchrist, whose father passed when he was two years old, has a reason for announcing on April 14th.

"It's his birthday today," Gilchrist said. "It's not for me. It's for him. I'm going to be wearing No. 14 in college. "

Gilchrist had his list narrowed to Kentucky, Villanova and Oregon. Gilchrist visited Kentucky on their Senior Day and got to see their fans up close and person.

"They have a lot of energy and I like the fan base a lot," Gilchrist said. "It's really crazy there."

Gilchrist has been rated the top prospect in the 2011 class since he was a freshman because of his versatility, potential and ability to score. He also has a competitive nature, which caught's National Recruiting Director's attention.

"Mike Gilchrist plays with the heart of a champion," Dave Telep said. "He's a selfless player who is hard wired to win. At NBA Camp last summer, we threw the best senior players in the country at him and he mowed them down."

A 6-foot-6, 190-pound wing, Gilchrist is the first member of the 2011 class to give Kentucky a verbal pledge.
