2011 Introduction: Norman Powell

Norman Powell, one of the top prospects in the west for 2011, tells us that three schools currently top his list...

Norman Powell, 6-2 SR SG San Diego (Calif.) Lincoln, is a terrific athlete and one of the elite shooting guards in the west for 2011. Powell is very fast in the open court and an explosive leaper. His shot is a bit flat, but he's got three-point range and he's an exceptional finisher around the basket. A very good competitor, Powell projects as a potential lockdown defender at the next level.

I spoke with Powell in Denver at the Pump Spring Tournament and asked about the schools that have been recruiting him.

"I'm hearing from UCLA, UTEP, Arizona State, San Diego State, Cal, Washington State, San Diego and Colorado," said Powell.

I asked him if any schools stand out for him at this time.

"Probably Cal, UTEP and ASU," said Powell.

Powell talked a little about the issues he'll consider when making his choice.

"The style of play and early playing time are important," said Powell. "The location doesn't matter."

I asked Powell if he has an idea as to when he'll choose a school.

"I don't really have a time frame," said Powell.

When asked if he has taken any visits yet, Powell replied, "I'll probably take a trip to Colorado this weekend during the tournament. And UCLA wants me to go to their Elite Camp so I'll go there."

Powell said he currently has a 3.3 GPA.
