2011 Introduction: Kenyatta Smith

Kenyatta Smith, a very promising 2011 post prospect from Southern California, was impressive this past weekend in Denver. He gives us some thoughts on his recruitment...

Kenyatta Smith, 6-7 SR C La Canada (Calif.) Flintridge Prep, is a much improved prospect from last season. A big-bodied post with nimble feet and excellent hands, Smith plays bigger than his size due to his long arms and deceptive athleticism. Smith has very good instincts around the basket and advanced footwork. With continued development, he projects as a high major prospect.

I spoke with Smith in Denver this past weekend and asked about the schools expressing interest in him so far.

"I'm hearing from Cal, Stanford, UCLA, Harvard, Penn and Princeton," said Smith. "Cal, Harvard and Penn have probably been showing the most interest.

I asked Smith if he has a leader at this time.

"No, I don't have a favorite," said Smith.

Smith talked a little about the factors that will be important when making his college choice.

"I want a good balance of academics and athletics," said Smith. "Early playing time isn't really a factor. If I work hard the playing time will be come. And the location doesn't matter. I will go anywhere."

I asked Smith is he has a time frame for making his decision.

"I'll probably decide sometime around October or November, said Smith. "I plan on playing through the summer before I decide."

Smith said he currently has a 3.6 GPA.
