Southern Jamfest: Day One

HAMPTON, Va. – Opening night at the HoopGroup Southern Jamfest gave us a chance to eyeball a few underclassmen. Sophomore point guard Frank Mason was impressive.

Frank Mason, PG, Team Loaded 16: Mans the controls for one of the best high school teams in Virginia. Mason has swagger at the point guard spot and a controlled crafty handle. His ability to knife through traffic and take care of the ball is impressive. His perimeter game is an area to beef up but he'll be a guy that should be hard to press and is excellent off the bounce.

Jerome Hairston, PG, East Coast Fusion: He's got a fairly balanced overall game already and showed be at least a mid-major point guard. Excellent off the drive and pitch, Hairston runs the show for Fusion. Hairston has good genes. His cousin is former Wake Forest standout James Johnson.

Reggie Dillard, SG, CP3: The Dudley standout grew since March. Dillard's quickness appeared to have improved and looked good going to the basket.

Isaiah Hicks, PF, Garner Road: The David West-sponsored 15 and under team is stacked with talent. Smooth guard Anton Gill is in the fold and Hicks mans the interior. He clips 6-8 and is just beginning to scratch the surface. A natural shot blocker, once his strength comes he's got a high upside.

We didn't pay much attention to the Boo Williams/MD Express game. Apparently, Boo's team wasn't real excited to play either. The heavyweight club needed a last season halfcourt heave from Sim Frazier to stave off a major upset. … Wave Basketball center Daniel Robinson is a 6-10 and is a long-term stock. … Fusion 2011 center Andre Washington is all of 6-9. He may reclass and has the physical tools and frame. …

Garner Road's Brandon Stith is the son of UVA standout Bryant Stith. He has the body type of a young Brandon Rush. … Abdul Kasim of CP3 16 is a thick 6-7 post player. The strongman took care of his area and boarded and blocked just about everything that came his way. …

Wave guard Jeremy Canty owns an offer from Norfolk State. Jacksonville, Towson, St. Bonaventure and St. Peters are interested. … Frank Mason owns offers from George Mason and Tennessee State. Baylor, Virginia and North Carolina have shown early interest. … Hairston has LSU, Virginia Tech, Richmond and William & Mary interested. Liberty offered early. Liberty coach Dale Layer's son is a guard in the backcourt with Hairston. …
