Johnson Taking His Time

Xavier Johnson, 6-6 SO SF Temecula (Calif.) Chaparral, is one of the elite prospects in the west for 2012. A versatile player, Johnson has the ability to play inside or on the perimeter. He's got a solid stroke to three-point range, he can put the ball on the floor and he can also play with his back to the basket. Unlike a lot of small forwards, Johnson has learned to play the game inside. He's a physical rebounder and a very good shot blocker for a three man.

I spoke with Johnson recently and asked about the schools that have been expressing interest in him.

"UNLV, UCLA, USC, Stanford, Georgetown, Arizona State, Texas and San Diego State have been the main ones so far," said Johnson.

I asked Johnson which schools have extended scholarship offers.

"UCLA, UNLV, USC and San Diego State have offered," said Johnson.

When asked if he has a feel for which schools have been recruiting him the hardest, Johnson replied, "UCLA and USC have been recruiting me the hardest because they're the closest."

I asked Johnson about the factors he'll consider when picking a school.

"The education is the biggest thing because I want to have something to fall back on if I don't make the NBA," said Johnson.

Johnson said he doesn't anticipate an early decision.

"I'll probably wait until my senior year because I really haven't even started to do any research on any schools," said Johnson. "Right now, I'm open to anyone."

Johnson said he has a 3.0 GPA.
