IU Snags Local Standout

Ron Patterson ended his recruitment on Sunday. He'll stay close to home.

Tom Crean has made the state of Indiana a priority and on Sunday he scored a big in-state prospect.

Ron Patterson gave Indiana a verbal commitment shortly after an unofficial visit to their campus. According to Patterson's AAU coach Chris Hawkins, there was a comfort level with IU and their program.

"I think it was a great situation for him," Hawkins said. "He's comfortable with the coaches. The biggest thing was his parents really like the coaching staff. They thought he would get better under their guidance."

Patterson, a standout at Indianaplis (Ind.) Broad Ripple, had a number of scholarship offers, but ultimately picked Indiana over Xavier, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

According to Hawkins the fact that Indiana head coach Tom Crean was the point man on Patterson's recruitment played a big role in his decision.

"They made him a priority since he was in 8th grade and went to their elite camp," Hawkins said. "They know what he can and can't do. Crean has been basically recruiting him the whole time."

Patterson is Indiana's second 2012 pick up in the past week. They also gained an oral commitment from Charlotte (N.C.) United Faith standout Peter Jurkin.
