Miami pulled off a close win Sunday night, defeating Illinois 63-59 and clinching a spot in the Sweet Sixteen, where the Canes will face off against Marquette on Thursday, March 28th in Washington D.C.


  • The game marked the first time these teams have met in an NCAA Championship. It was only the second time ever that the two have played and the series is now tied at 1-1. The first meeting was an 86-76 Illinois win on December 28th, 1968 in Miami.

  • The game had an attendance of 14,520.

  • This season marks Miami's eighteenth appearance in the NCAA championship and next weekend will be the team's second Sweet Sixteen. This is, however, the Canes first Sweet Sixteen since 2000.

  • Head coach Jim Larranaga is making his sixth NCAA Championship appearance as a head coach (has a 6-5 record) and his first at Miami (2-0).

  • Miami increases its program record for wins in a season to 29. The hurricanes have fourteen 20-win seasons in program history, including four consecutive.

  • Junior guard Rion Brown recorded his third 20-point game of the season with 21 points on 7-14 shooting, including a season high 5-of-10 mark from 3-point range. He reached double figures in points for the seventh time this season and led the Hurricanes in scoring for the third time this season. 13 of his 21 points were score din the second half on 3-of-7 shooting.

  • Sophomore guard Shane Larkin reached double figures in scoring (seventeen points) for the 29th game this season.
