Russ Smith leads Louisville into Elite Eight

Russ Smith scored 31 points in the University of Louisville's 77-69 victory over Oregon in Sweet 16 action at Lucas Oil Stadium on Friday night.

Behind a career-high tying 31 points from guard Russ Smith, the University of Louisville defeated Oregon 77-69 in the NCAA Sweet 16 on Friday night.

Sophomore Kevin Ware scored 11, while Gorgui Dieng added 10 points.

Playing without senior guard Peyton Siva for most of the first half because of two early personal fouls, the Cardinals received key play from reserve guard Kevin Ware. Louisville led 45-31 at halftime.

Louisville outscored Oregon 42-34 in the paint and shot 54% from the floor.

U of L head coach Rick Pitino improves to 11-0 all-time in Sweet 16 games.

The Cardinals advance to the Elite 8 where they will face the winner of the Duke - Michigan State game.
