Bears Drop the Devils

For the third time in three years, the #11 Baylor Bears (6-0) took down the Arizona State Sun Devils (3-3) by a final score of 68-54. LaceDarius Dunn led all scorers with 24 points, making it his third consecutive game with 20 points or more.

Arizona State jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before Baylor head coach Scott Drew called a timeout to regroup only 1:23 into the game. The move paid off, as the Bears then went on a 16-3 run. The Bears increased their lead to 12 midway through the first half, but ASU was able to narrow the gap to 6 by half time.

Just like in the first half, Arizona State came out from the break shooting well. Leading scorer Rihards Kuksiks nailed two 3 point baskets to tie the game at 33. Dunn did what he does best and answered with a 3 of his own (one of his 6 on the night) to put the Bears back on top. Baylor never looked back after that and gradually pulled away from there.

Dunn left the game for a few minutes after a hard fall to the ground, but later returned to the game. Early reports are that it is only a bruised forearm.

The Baylor defense gave Arizona State fits all night, forcing 15 turnovers and making them take 23 shots from beyond the 3 point line, where they have struggled all season. PG A.J. Walton had 4 steals to go along with 3 assists and 13 points. Freshman star Perry Jones III added 12 points and 7 rebounds, including several putbacks after other Baylor misses. Fred Ellis came in off the bench and added 6 points from beyond the arc. Baylor as a team was 9/19 from 3.

The Bears now have a 13 day break between games as final exams approach. They'll resume play against Bethune-Cookman 12/15 at 7:00, and then on to Gonzaga at the American Airlines Center in Dallas 12/18 at 3:30.
