A Film Comparative From High School Senior to Baylor Senior
Name: Nick Florence Position: Quarterback
Weight: 167 lbs.
High School: South Garland High School (Garland, Texas)
2008 – Nick Florence out of South Garland High School isn't going to jump out of the film at you as an All-American Quarterback. He isn't the biggest, the fastest, or the strongest. He is, however, smart, quick, can throw with decent arm strength and great touch. Florence projects to have big upside.
Florence is more of an intermediate passer than a big gun. He can thread the ball through defenders on drags and short inside routes with good ball placement and decent speed. When he tries to release the ball quickly, sometimes his throwing motion goes somewhat side arm and he doesn't open his hips up to receivers or flex through with his throwing hip. He could gain more power here than making the throw with just his arm. At times he looks like he has to heave the ball to get it in there on time. He has a knack for getting the ball just in front of receivers on quick slants. Florence looks like he may telescope at times but that is coachable. When it comes to timing and anticipation routes, he has that naturally. What he doesn't have is a big arm. When passing down field, the arm strength isn't all there, but he can place the ball well.
When in the pocket Florence has good awareness of where he and the rest of both teams are. He is quick enough to get that first step on defenders to either roll outside the pocket, or to get up field. His best burst of speed is that initial switch to running North South. He is not a barn burner and isn't going to break one up the middle for 80 yards, but his is fast enough to catch the opportunities when he sees them and move the stick. Nick is just enough of a running threat to make the defense account for him more than a true pocket passer. With coaching, extra time in the weight room, and practice on his mechanics, Nick Florence could be an above average QB with his instincts, composure, and IQ.
Part 2 of this 3 part series will focus on Nick Florence's journey as a Baylor quarterback up until last season. Stay tuned to BearsIllustrated.com for the latest.
