Player Spotlight—Collin Brence
Brence surprised most with his quality play as a freshman last season for the Bears. Mostly a special teams standout, Brence also can line up at the safety position for the Bears. The 5'11", 190-pound Plano High School prospect was not heavily recruited out of high school, but he has made an early impact for the Bears.
Brence saw his first action as a Bear against the Rice Owls recording a special teams tackle. Brence later tallied tackles against the Wildcats of Kansas State, Missouri, and Kansas. He is entering the 2011 as an underclassman, but he now has a little more experience under his belt. Brence saw significant practice time in the spring in the secondary. The Bears are returning two starters in Mike Hicks and Sam Holl at the safety positions, and with safeties Josh Wilson and Chance Casey returning Brence will likely have some depth chart battles to win. He will continue to make strides as a special teams player and will likely see spot-duty in the secondary this season.
