Honors Given To Baylor's RG3 and Ganaway
According to a NFF Hampshire Honor Society Press Release, Baylor's Terrance Ganaway and Robert Griffin III were named to the 2012 Hampshire Honor Society by the National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame, the organizations announced Wednesday. The NFF Hampshire Honor Society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career. A total of 721 players from 232 schools qualified for membership in the society's sixth year, marking this year's class as the largest since the program's creation in 2007. The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF's current National Scholar-Athlete program greatly expanding the number of scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year. The program further strengthens the organization's leadership role in encouraging academic performance by the student-athletes who play football at the more than 700 college and universities with football programs nationwide. Jon F. Hanson, the chairman and founder of The Hampshire Companies, provided the endowment to launch the NFF Hampshire Honor Society in 2007. He made the contribution as part of his legacy to the organization after serving as NFF chairman from 1994-2006. He currently serves the organization as a chairman emeritus. Each player awarded with membership in this year's Honor Society will receive a certificate commemorating their achievement. Qualifications for membership in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include: * Being a starter or a significant substitute in one's last year of eligibility at an accredited NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III, or an NAIA college or university; * Achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study; and * Meeting all NCAA-mandated progress towards degree requirements and graduation. Griffin III led Baylor to just its second 10-victory season of all-time, and its first since 1980. The 2011 Heisman Trophy winner set or tied 54 school records in three full seasons at Baylor, finishing the 2011 season with school records of 4,293 yards, 37 passing touchdowns and a passer efficiency rating of 189.5 (second-best in NCAA FBS history). A native of Copperas Cove, Texas, and graduate of Copperas Cove High School, Griffin III earned second-team Academic All-America honors from Capital One/CoSIDA in 2011 and is a 2010 Baylor graduate with a degree in political science. Ganaway, an All-Big 12 selection and the Offensive MVP of the 2011 Valero Alamo Bowl, rushed for a school-record 1,547 yards and 21 touchdowns. He recorded three 200-yard rushing games, matching the number of 200-yard performances in 109 previous seasons of Baylor football. Ganaway also broke the school record for carries in a game when he rushed 42 times for 246 yards in a win over Texas Tech. The DeKalb, Texas, native graduated from Baylor in 2010 with a degree in general studies. RG3 was selected No. 2 overall by the Washington Redskins in last month's NFL Draft, while Ganaway was selected in the sixth round by the New York Jets.
