Baylor versus Texas Tech Preview

The Bears look for their first road win in Big 12 play as they travel to Lubbock to play the young and unproven Red Raiders

Can we get this out of the way real quick? Texas Tech is not a very good team at all. According to KenPom rankings, only Jackson State and Lamar are worse out of all of the teams the Bears have played, and it really isn't close. The Red Raiders are 8-4 on the year with their best win being over North Carolina A&T, before they got a road win in Fort Worth against TCU this weekend. They have played the 345th hardest schedule in the country according to Sagarin and have four losses already. IN fact, they have lost to any team that has remotely had a pulse and then they threw a loss to McNeese State in at home for good measure.

The closest team the Bears have played in the rankings to Tech is probably a slightly better version of Jackson State. To say that Tech is in a rebuilding year is probably an insult to the word rebuilding. Alright, now that we have the Texas Tech basketball joke series out of the way, let's take a look at what they do actually have.

They have returning freshman star, Jordan Tolbert, who has gotten off to a slow scoring start, but is playing much more under control and efficiently this year. He is shooting the ball better (52.1% versus 53.2%), he is turning it over less (2.6 versus 1.8) and is getting more rebounds (5.7 versus 6.3). However you have to take these numbers with a huge grain of salt due to the level of competition the Red Raiders have played. Let's take a look at how he performed against two teams that are at least decent power conference teams in Alabama and Arizona State.

Alabama – 4-9 shooting, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 12 points in 33 minutes

Arizona State – 5-11 shooting, 5 rebounds, 1 turnover, 10 points in 21 minutes

Against both of these teams, he was one of their better performers, but he is taking a low number of shots this year, and is not as active on the glass. Part of that is the emergence of Jaye Crockett, a 6-7 forward who has emerged as a viable rotation player for the Red Raiders, and someone that might be undersized for post play in the Big 12, but has given them some more activity and athleticism in the post. Both of their forwards are undersized, with Tolbert coming in at 6-7 as well.

Crockett is their leading scorer this year, averaging 15 points per game to go along with 8.8 rebounds. He had a big game against TCU, where he scored 13 points. The junior has come off the bench in all but one game this year, though he is leading the team in minutes played per game. Dejan Kravic, a space eating 6-11 center starts, and gets about 20 minutes per game. The three-headed post rotation has actually been the strength of the Red Raiders, as three of their top four scorers are in the post.

College Basketball

Their other big scoring threat is Josh Gray, a 6-1 freshman guard who is their point guard and facilitator. Most of their offense goes through Gray, either by him shooting it or passing it. He takes the most shots on the team, with way too many of them coming from behind the arc. He takes over 3 three-pointers per game, yet only makes 23.7% of them. He is a quicker guard who likes to get into the paint, something that the Bears have struggled with. 52% of Gray's shots come at the rim, so the Bears will have to do a good job of keeping him out of the paint.

The Red Raiders have a large cast of players that they call on. In fact, they have 8 players playing at least 15 minutes and 2 more playing over 10. Their starting point guard last year and only senior on this years team, Ty Nurse only gets 11.8 minutes per game this year. 41% of their minutes played as a team comes from their bench, which is the 17th highest rate in the country according to KenPom. They do this because they play at a very high tempo, the 34th fastest team in the country.

While they only go three deep in the post, they do have quite a few bodies for the other three positions. Their starting guards are Gray at point guard, and Dusty Hannahs, a 6-4 freshman who is by far their best 3-point shooter, making 46.5% of them off of a team leading 3.6 attempts per game. He averages only 15 minutes per game, but they like to get him the ball early when he is in and let him score quickly. IN just under 16 minutes per game, he gets up almost 5 shots. The third starter is Trency Jackson a sophomore transfer who has been pretty mediocre all year. He does not shoot well (29.5% shooting from the field, 32.4% from 3-point range), does not pass or rebound well (1.4 assists, 2.5 rebounds) and turns it over 2 times per game. However, he plays good defense and gets his hands on a lot of balls, with 1.4 steals per game in 23.5 minutes. Backing them up are Jamal Williams, a 6-4 wing and Daylen Robinson a 6-0 guard.

They are fast and they like to push the ball in transition quite a bit, though they are a terrible 3-point shooting team, usually a characteristic you want to have when you push the tempo. They only make 28% of their 3-point shots, the 321st ranked team in the nation. Tech is a terrible 3-point shooting team and they also a high number of quality 3-point looks on defense. They are also very average at the rim, making only 66% of their shots, while the Bears make 72% (14th best in the country).

Keys to the Game

-Pick and Roll Defense – While they will not run this as well as Texas did, the Red Raiders have some nice options. Josh Gray would seem to be a good point guard for the pick and roll, as he is good at dribble penetration, but he is not a threat to shoot if the Bears go under the screen. They do have two athletic post players in Crockett and Tubbs, err, I mean Tolbert that can hit mid-range shots or use dribble penetration against a scrambling help defender. Baylor has to do a MUCH better job of playing disciplined and decisive defense in the pick and roll. Too many times against Texas did they play slowly or not have the two key defenders on the same page.

-Get Brady going from deep – Again, the Bears probably don't need Brady going off for 15+ points in this game to win it, but Texas Tech is a team that likes to give up good looks from the 3-point line, and now is as good of a time as any to get the sharp-shooting Canadian out of his funk. Brady has made just two of his last ten 3-point shots in the last two games, and is only at 34.6% shooting for the year. Take out his magnificent game against St Johns and he is at 28.78%. That is just not nearly good enough for what the Bears need from their sharpshooter. For the long-term success of this team, Brady needs to be much closer to 35% at least for the offense to be fully clicking.

-Protect the ball – If there is one thing that Texas Tech does do very well, it is force turnovers. In fact, they are one of the best teams in the nation at getting their hands on balls. They have the 17th highest steal % in the country, and the 72nd highest percentage of possessions ending in a block. In total, 24.5% of all of their opponent's possessions end in a turnover. That is the 25th best rate in the country, and pretty impressive when you look at the sheer numbers of possessions defensively the Red Raiders have.

Predictions

KenPom – Bears win 84-71 (86% chance for win)

Massey – Bears win 83-72 (86% chance for win)

TeamRanking – Bears win 70.9-64.6 (72.6% chance for win)

BearsIllustrated – Bears win 74-58

Baylor will just be too much on the inside, negating the strength of the Red Raiders. They will also be able to exploit the weakest part of the Red Raider team, their inability to defend the 3-point line. This is a game that the Bears should win by a very large margin, but some sloppy play early and more struggles with their outside shot will keep Tech in it for a while, before the Bears pull away late.
