BearsIllustrated Big 12 Rankings – February 6

We take a look at the Big 12 rankings and how we see the teams stacking up.

With another week in the books, we saw quite a bit of shuffling in the 3rd through 6th spots, but nothing outside of that, even though our #1 team fell at home.

1. Kansas Jayhawks

Overall Record - 19-2

Big 12 Record – 7-1

KenPom – 8

RPI – 7

I guess the Jayhawks aren't perfect, and neither will be their conference record this year. They lost at home to Oklahoma State on Saturday in one of the more shocking upsets of the year. Kansas doesn't lose at home to unranked teams…at least till now. Point guard play for KU has been a struggle, as Elijiah Johnson is really playing out of position but is still their best option. While that won't probably won't stop them from winning the Big 12, that will probably be the reason why they won't win the championship this year.

2. Kansas State Wildcats

Overall Record – 18-4

Big 12 Record – 7-2

KenPom -30

RPI – 24

A 3-0 run since our last ranking only strengthens their standing as the second best team. They dominated the Longhorns at home before road wins against OU and the Red Raiders. They are playing great defense, and have a surging Big 12 player of the year candidate in Rodney McGruder.

3. Iowa State Cyclones

Overall Record – 16-6

Big 12 Record – 6-3

KenPom -27

RPI – 34

The Cyclones are surging, especially with their last three wins being over Kansas State, Baylor and Oklahoma. All three were at home though. This is a team that can beat anyone in the Big 12 in Ames, but seems to struggle on the road. After their big week, and victories over Oklahoma and Baylor though, they deserve to be in the 3rd spot. Can they keep it though with road games at KSU, UT and Baylor coming up though?

4. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Overall Record – 15-5

Big 12 Record – 5-3

KenPom -19

RPI – 29

With the best win of the year so far in the Big 12, the Cowboys rise to #4. They did what no one else has been able to do in a long time, win in Lawrence. That has to count for something, and with wins also over West Virginia and Iowa State in their last three games, they are a team on the rise. Watch out of the Cowboys.

5. Oklahoma Sooners

Overall Record – 14-7

Big 12 Record – 5-4

KenPom – 56

RPI – 23

After their performance against Baylor, the Sooners appeared to be poised to move up in the rankings; however they followed that up with a close loss at home to Kansas State, and then were demolished by Iowa State on the road. The Sooners have Kansas coming up next, and that could mean 4 losses in their last five games.

6. Baylor Bears

Overall Record – 14-7

Big 12 Record – 5-3

KenPom -28

RPI – 50

With two big games on the schedule against Iowa State and Oklahoma, Baylor also had a chance to secure a strong hold on 2nd place in the Big 12 standings, but with both games resulting in losses, the Bears fall to the back of the pack of that group fighting for one of the last NCAA spots out of the Big 12. They still have some chances to impress, with home games against Iowa State, Kansas, and both games against Kansas State remaining, but that also could mean more losses.

7. West Virginia Mountaineers

Overall Record – 11-11

Big 12 Record – 4-5

KenPom -99

RPI – 92

The Mountaineers have to be disappointed in their inaugural season in the Big 12, which sees them only beating the teams behind them in the standings and these rankings. This is where the drop off begins in the Big 12, as the everyone from this point out is hoping for an NIT run at this point. West Virginia is a real good defensive and rebounding team, but they still have just a dreadful offensive attack highlighted by being one of the worst shooting teams in the country.

8. Texas Longhorns

Overall Record – 10-12

Big 12 Record – 2-7

KenPom -91

RPI – 149

The hopes were higher than this down in Austin, but the loss of Myck Kabongo was just too big for them. At this point, they are playing for next year, even when Kabongo gets back in a little while. They have already lost both matchups with the Mountaineers, and all but one of their remaining games is against teams higher in the standings than them. This could get uglier before it gets better, even with their star point guard back.

9. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Overall Record – 9-11

Big 12 Record – 2-7

KenPom -246

RPI – 203

And here comes the second cliff in the Big 12. Texas Tech has lost three straight games after their shocking win at home against Iowa State. Pretty much that is all that is left for the Red Raiders this year, who can they upset at home.

10. TCU Horned Frogs

Overall Record – 9-12

Big 12 Record – 0-8

KenPom -278

RPI – 223

I really don't want to sound like I am picking on TCU, but it is just too hard to not sound like that. They have a chance to be a historically bad Power Conference team. They have already lost at home against Texas Tech in their best chance for a win, and still have two games against Kansas and Oklahoma along with road games to Kansas State and Iowa State. They could be the first Big 12 team to go 0-18, and not even be close to win a game. Their closest game in the Big 12 is a 9 point loss to Texas Tech, but everyone else has beaten them by at least 11 points. They have lost by 26 to Baylor, 21 to West Virginia and 17 to Texas.
