Baylor Recruiting Series: Ishmael Zamora

In part I of BearsIllustrated.com's "Baylor Recruiting Series," we take a look at Ishmael Zamora. We catch up with him to see how his HS season is going so far, goals for his senior season, and his thoughts on heading to Baylor.

Heading in to the summer, Ishmael Zamora was a relative unknown in the recruiting circles. But after being pursued by Baylor, schools began to come calling. Ishmael is, after all, a world class track star. But being a part of a heavy running team, in Houston (TX) Elsik HS, doesn't allow someone with Zamora's talent to come forward too often. However, heading in to the 2013 season, it seems as though Zamora has had the opportunity to showcase some of those skills that led to him receiving and accepting a scholarship to play WR at Baylor University.

On the season, Zamora has 6 catches for 207 yds and 2 TDs. Those stats, so far, are a huge improvement off of last year. Zamora credits his early success to his practice habits and his will to improve at his position. "I do the right things in practice and in the games to carry my team the best way I can," Zamora said. "I've been working a lot on my speed, concentration, and blocking. My team didn't start the way we wanted to, but after our first loss we are all trying to get on the same page, and having a fire to want to practice hard, listen more, and key in on big details to win!" His improvement on concentration and speed was put on display this past Friday, against Houston (TX) Lamar Consolidated HS. Zamora went inside on a slant route, tipped the ball to himself, and outran the secondary on his way to a 77 yd TD.

With his football schedule being busy so far, Zamora admits he hasn't been able to get up to Waco for a Baylor game. However, he was able to catch the Baylor win against Buffalo. The senior WR liked what he saw, "I just can imagine myself flourishing and flying around the field in the offense like Tevin Reese." Zamora said that the Tevin Reese TD reminded him of his own against Lamar Conslidated, and that it just got him more excited about joining the explosive Baylor offense. Another thing that gets him excited is the opportunity to work with one of the top strength and conditioning coaches in America, Kaz Kazadi. "I want to be faster, and I want my awareness on the field to improve, and I know that he will help with that," Zamora said. "I'm just excited about the experience, fun times, and the opportunities they have for me!"

As for recruiting, Zamora says that things have been slow, "it's slow like when I started, but I still hear from TCU every now and then." His relationship with the Baylor coaches is a big reason for that. "My relationship is great. I talk to Coach KB a lot and we talk about everything from football, to school, to relationships." Zamora is planning to make an official visit to Baylor, but is waiting to hear from the Baylor coaches on a date. He is also wanting to take officials to other schools that will let him. Is this something Baylor fans should be worried about? "I just want to visit other schools for the trip. I'm mostly doing it for my mom. I wanna take her on the trips and maker her happy."

Zamora is excited to be a Bear, and is someone that Baylor fans will enjoy watching on Saturdays. He will be apart of what could arguably be the best WR class in the country. Stay tuned to BearsIllustrated.com as we continue our Recruiting Series later this week.
